Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church

Roxbury St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Johnstown, PA. contacted us because their existing sound system, several ceiling speakers powered by a constant voltage mixer/amp, did not provide the flexibility necessary for a praise and worship band and lacked adequate monitor capabilities.

The church worked with Bob Capotosto of ATS Pro Audio to plan and develop the scope of the project. The aesthetics of the church was also concern, eliminating the possibility of using a flown speaker cluster.

After modeling the church with EASE software, an EVI 12 main speaker was selected because it was possible to mount the speaker from the ceiling without the usual cables associated with a flown speaker.

The direct sound pressure generated by the EVI 12 was very even. EASE demonstrated that in the seating area the SPL (sound pressure level) would be plus or minus 3db.

In addition, the alcons ranged from a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 6.

With the main speaker chosen, the selection of the subwoofer was the next task. In addition to being unable to fly the subwoofers, floor space was very limited and unavailable. The only available location was hiding them in an opening above the doorways.

An Electro Voice DX 38 processor was chosen to do the time alignment between the subs and the main speaker as well as main equalization. An additional output from the DX 38 was utilized for the existing outdoor speakers housed in the steeple.

The console chosen for the installation was the Allen & Heath GL 2200-16 because of the sonic quality, construction and individual four segment LED input displays.

Carver amplifiers powered both main and monitor speakers. The existing Bogen amplifier powered the existing speakers in the steeple. Two monitor mixes each with a Yorkville CM1260 speaker were provided. A DBX 2215 equalizer was installed for equalization of the monitor mixes.
